Sutra neti
Sutra Neti is a yogic nasal cleansing technique that involves using a soft thread or specially designed rubber catheter to clean the nasal passages. It’s part of the Shatkarmas, the six purification practices in Hatha Yoga. Sutra Neti is an advanced practice and should be done under the guidance of an experienced yoga instructor. Here’s a detailed description of how to perform Sutra Neti:
- Preparation:
- Sutra (Thread): Use a waxed cotton thread about 1.5 to 2 feet long or a specially designed rubber catheter (usually more flexible and softer on the nostrils) for the practice.
- Sterilization: Ensure the thread or rubber catheter is clean and sterilized before use.
- Lubrication and Insertion:
- Lubricate the Sutra: Apply a small amount of ghee (clarified butter) or oil to the front end of the thread or catheter.
- Nostril Insertion: Gently insert the lubricated end of the thread or catheter into one nostril. The thread should glide smoothly and comfortably through the nostril.
- Passing the Sutra through the Nasal Passage:
- Insert and Guide: Slowly and gently guide the thread or catheter through the nostril, allowing it to pass through the nasal cavity until you feel it at the back of the throat.
- Throat to Mouth: Once the thread or catheter is in the throat, carefully guide it out through the mouth.
- Gently Moving the Sutra:
- Back and Forth Movement: With both ends of the thread or catheter now in your hands (one in each nostril), gently move it back and forth through the nasal passages to cleanse them.
- Cleaning and Repeating:
- Cleaning Nasal Passages: Continue the back and forth movement of the thread or catheter for a few minutes, ensuring it cleanses the nasal passages effectively.
- Switching Nostrils: After completing the cleansing, gently remove the thread or catheter from one nostril, then repeat the process through the other nostril.
- Post-Practice Care:
- Gargle and Blow Nose: Gargle with warm salt water and blow your nose gently to clear any remaining mucus or solution from the nasal passages.
- Frequency and Caution:
- Frequency: Sutra Neti can be performed a few times a week, under guidance, for those experienced in the practice.
- Caution: This practice requires caution and proper guidance, especially for beginners or individuals with nasal or sinus issues.
Sutra Neti should be performed with care and guidance to avoid injury and ensure safe and effective cleansing of the nasal passages. It’s advisable to learn Sutra Neti from an experienced yoga instructor who can guide you through the correct technique and precautions. If you have specific health conditions or concerns, consult a healthcare professional before attempting this practice.
