Preksha Meditation
Preksha Meditation is a unique and ancient form of meditation rooted in the Jain tradition of spirituality. It was reintroduced and popularized by Acharya Mahapragya and Acharya Tulsi in the 20th century. Preksha Meditation emphasizes self-awareness, self-transformation, and insight into the nature of reality. It’s a holistic practice that encompasses physical postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, and concentration methods.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to practicing Preksha Meditation:
- Relaxation and Centering: Begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space to sit. Assume a comfortable posture, preferably Padmasana (lotus pose) or Sukhasana (easy pose). Close your eyes and relax your body, taking a few deep breaths to center yourself.
- Preparation with Body Awareness: Start with a brief awareness of the body. Scan your body from head to toe, becoming aware of each part and consciously relaxing any tension or discomfort.
- Kayotsarga (Deep Relaxation): Practice Kayotsarga, a technique involving progressive relaxation of the body parts. Begin by focusing on the toes and slowly move your awareness upwards, relaxing and letting go of tension in each body part.
- Anupreksha (Contemplation): Engage in contemplation by reflecting on specific spiritual or philosophical themes. These could include impermanence, compassion, or equanimity. Contemplate deeply on the chosen theme, integrating it into your consciousness.
- Antaryatra (Inner Journey): Close your eyes and imagine an internal journey within your body. Begin from the toes, moving gradually up to the head, observing and experiencing the energy and sensations within each part of your body.
- Anapanasati (Breath Awareness): Focus on your breath. Observe the natural inhalation and exhalation without controlling it. Let your attention rest on the breath, and if your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the breath.
- Color Meditation (Chromo-therapy): Visualize various colors, starting with white and moving through the spectrum of colors. Imagine each color entering and energizing your body, bringing positivity and healing.
- Mantra Meditation: Chant a specific mantra or focus on a particular sound or phrase. Let the mantra resonate within you, creating a meditative and harmonious state of mind.
- Dhyan (Meditation): Engage in a period of silent meditation. Let go of any techniques or practices and simply be present, observing the stillness and calmness within.
- Prayer and Gratitude: Conclude your practice with a moment of prayer or expressing gratitude for the practice and the peace it brings.
Preksha Meditation is a holistic approach that can promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It resonates with your interest in learning and exploring new practices.
