Hernia and Herniated Disk

The protrusion of a body part through a defect in the wall that surrounds it is hernia. It may be congenital (by birth), or it may develop when muscle walls are weakened by strain or disease. Whereas herniated disk happens when there is protrusion of any of the disks that separate and cushion the vertebrae or bones of the spinal columns. The presence of a herniated disk usually becomes apparent only when the protuberance is large enough to press against a nerve and cause severe pain.
