First let’s see why this exercise has been given so long nomenclature as Uccarana Sthala Vishuddhi Chakra Suddhi. Uccarana sthala is the Hindi/sanskrit phrase for location in our body where the voice is generated. This place is called larynx. Another phrase in the name of this exercise is Visuddha Cakra which is one of the seven chakras of our pranic body and is located in the neck region. This exercise is meant for purification of larynx and visuddha chakra and hence, this exercise is called Uccarana sthala tatha visuddha cakra suddhi.

Starting Position of Uccarana Sthala Vishuddhi Chakra Suddhi
Keep your feet together and body straight, tilt your head slightly backward while keeping your eyes wide open and your mouth closed. The chin must 2 and 1/2 inch above the sternal notch (the cavity at the base of the throat) and held in to be in line with the eyes.
Exercise/ Technique of Uccarana Sthala Vishuddhi Chakra Suddhi
- Let your arms hang normally by the side.
- Concentrating on your vocal chords (larynx)
- Inhale and exhale deeply and rapidly through the nose with the bellows effect.
Precautions of Uccarana Sthala Vishuddhi Chakra Suddhi
Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari, in his book on Yogic Sukshama Vyayama had mentioned that in Yoga exercises, there is a system of breathing deeply and rapidly with a sharp and quick intake and outlet of breath which is accompanied by the kind of noise which a pair of bellows would make when they are worked. This system of breathing is used in this exercise.
