- Before inhaling, relax the stomach and abdomen.
- Then inhale through the nose slowly.
- Before repeating another round, breath normally for a minute.
Practice three rounds at first, then gradually increase to ten rounds.
Effects:
With regular practice of uddiyana bandha, the effects become visibly apparent. Vitality increases as uddiyana has a powerful toning effect on the visceral organs, muscles, nerves and glands. The suction created stimulated blood circulation and absorption. The heart is squeezed and gently massaged by the upward pressure of the diaphragm. The suction or negative pressure in the thorax draws venous blood up from the abdomen into the heart and the same time arterial blood is drawn into the internal organs. The autonomic nerves comprising the solar plexus are strengthened. The process of digestion, assimilation, and elimination are directly affected.
This bandha works on the manipura chakra and vishnu granthi.
Uddiyana means flying upward energy lock. It is the bandh that moves the energy upward from the earth, water and fire centers into the heart (air) chakra strongly influencing the efficacy of the lower bandhas by 'making room' on top. Some claim that it helps suck the energy into the central column. It prevents accummulated tensions, toxins or stagnation to develop or accummulate in the navel region. Although cleansing through its power to remove stagnant energy, there it allows stuck or distracted energy to move through this region and pu through the sushumna which is its natural uncorrupated path, hence it helps to purify and energize not only this region, the front of the lower spine, but also the entire body.
