Soul is self which is separate from the body. The body is called Jeeva and the Self is Atma, both combined then called jeevatama.
People use to think that in our body, our atma resides. The rational thinking is that we are the souls living in the bodies to interact with other souls through their bodies. We need bodies to interact here on this earth. We are the Souls. But this much information is not sufficient. We should know the Swaroop of the soul, that is how we are, what we are as a soul. We are a point of light and this point is so subtle that it is smaller than the size of an atom which is itself invisible. So, the soul cannot be seen through these naked eyes. We should perceive ourselves as a point of soul having vibrations all around depending upon our thinking, sansakaras, and karmas. The range of vibrations of ourselves is called aura. The more powerful we are in terms of positivity and purity, the more bright our aura is.
We as a soul are immortal and can never be perishable by fire, water, etc. We just change bodies through the process of birth and death and in the process, our sanskaras are modified from soul consciousness to body consciousness and this transformation is the cause of our pains. Now, we again have to resume our soul consciousness to have ultimate liberation - mukti and jeevan mukti - moksha.
