Naadi are the subtle channels in the subtle body through which energy called prana flows and these naadis or channels joins at the special points which are called chakras.
Among them, there are three main naadis.
-
Sushumna naadi interpenetrates the cerebrospinal axis from the perineum to the juncture of the lamboid and sagittal suture of the cranium. Its activation is sensed when both nostrils are opened and free flows for the air. It is active during deep meditation or advanced stage of pranayama or during samadhi and activation of sushmna is an indication of ascent of kundalini energy from Mooladhara chakra.
-
On the left of Sushumna, there is Ida naadi which is of feminine and also called chandra naadi (Moon Naadi), as it has cooling effect like that of moon and it is sensed when the left nostril is opened and alows the free flow of air. It refers to the right hand side of the brain and controls all the mental processes
-
On the right of Sushmna, there is pingla naadi which is of masculine nature and also called surya naadi (sun or solar naadi) as it has sun-like nature and it is sensed when the right nostril is opened and allows the free flow of air. It corresponds to the left hand side of the brain and controls all the vital processes.
