As per the reports of the Yoga Biomedical Trust, London, 98% of back pain sufferers found yoga helpful, 90% of cancer patients, 82% people of insomnia, and 100 PER CENT OF ALCHOLICS.

Along with Psychotherapy and some aspects of naturopathy, yoga therapy enables one to manage with his addiction problem so that he can manage to withdraw the symptoms of the alcohol dependence and retard the craving for alcohol (as soon as he develops his mental and intellectual powers on account of psychotherapy, emotional support, yoga tradition, relaxation, meditation and internal mental thoughts analysis).

The following practices shall help to get rid of addiction:
A. Shatkarmas : (yogic cleansing actions - that need to be done under guidance of qualified yoga instructor / therapist)
(i) kapalbhati - starting with 3 rounds for 30 strokes per round and increase upto 60-100 strokes.
(ii) Vamandhouti - (Kunjal) three times a week.
(iii) Neti - jala neti and sutra neti - three times a week.

Precaution: In case of acute gastritis, kunjal should be avoided.

B.Asanas (without any over strain and within comfort zone)
(i) Suryanamaskar
(ii) Suksham Vyayam - as developed by Swami Dhirendra Brahma Chari - and Sthool Vyayam - Sarvangpushti.
(iii)Tadasana (1 minute), Urdhavahastottanasana (30 seconds on both sides), Pavanmuktasana (30 seconds on both sides, 30 seconds with both legs folded), Gomukhasana (30 seconds from each side), Yogamudrasana (30 seconds or as per comfort zone), Bhujangasana (15 - 20 seconds), Dhanurasana (15 seconds), Shavasana alongwith progressive relaxation for 10 minutes.
Precaution: For every forwarding asana, counter with backward asanas. Always do the asanas in your capacity zone even below the zone. Back pain or cervical spondylitis should not forward bend.

C. Breathing /Meditation-
(i) Deep breathing - deep inhalation (for counts 1 to 4 ) and deep exahlation (for counts 1 to 4)
(ii) Yogic Breathing/ Naada Anusandhaana Pranayama - Abdominal Breathing (exahale with "AAA" chant), Thoracic Breathing (exahale with "OOO" chant) and Clavicular Breathing ("MMM" chant) and then yogic breathing from all regions - abdomina, thoracic and clavicular (exahle with AUM Chant).
(iii)Naadishuddhi pranayama
(iv) Ujjayi Pranayama
(v) Brahmari Pranayama
(vi) Om Chanting for 21 times and om meditation - feeling the vibrations in the entire body.

C. Yoga Nidra /Autogenic training- with sankalpa / autosuggestions to your subsconscious mind for getting rid of addiction.

Since alcoholism is related to low mental strength to get rid of this habit, the following ayurvedic herbs can also be helpful:

(i) Ashwagandha - makes mentally stronger and determination power to leave the habit of alcholism.

(ii) Brahmi - for mental strength.

(iii) Jatamansi - helps in generating positive thoughts as well as getting rid of negative thoughts, cooling effects.

These herbs must be taken in consultation with ayurvedic doctor who will suggest the way to take these herbs.
