I have the identical plastic neti pot and started doing jala neti for 1 month. I put a quarter of teaspoon salt in the pot and I do it by the book. I've developed cold symptoms, with pre-cold blocked catarrh nose the next day. Where am I wrong. If I continue like this I eventually get catch cold.

Hygiene should be on your priority. Check whether you keep the neti pot at safe and disinfected place and you use it only after washing it clearly and rinse with the hot water and again keep at safe place. Unhygienic practice can also lead to some infection leading to cold.

The other most important point never to be ignored is kapalbhati after jala neti so as to eliminate all the water and moisture from the nostrils after the neti is done. The accumulation of moisture or water drops can also lead to some trouble. Some even feel headache through out the day, because of this remnant water inside the nostrils.

So, it is better to dry your nostrils with kapalbhati. You can check this by blowing out on the back of your hand. If you find significant number of water drops, you need to do kapalbhati. But kapalbhati should be done within your capacity.
